About Us
Jinny’s Rainbow Comfort Quilts is a charity that was started in memory of my mother, Virginia Leland. Jinny was treated at the Overlook Hospital Carol G. Simon Cancer Center in Summit, New Jersey. Everyone there, from physicians to technicians, treated Jinny with the utmost care, respect and dignity. They were incredibly kind and welcoming to her and made every effort to answer her questions, ease her pain, and treat her as the wonderful woman she was.
Jinny had monthly chemotherapy treatments to which I accompanied her. I noticed that while my mother was usually in the treatment chair for about 30 minutes, there were patients who were undergoing treatment for many hours at a time. The idea of the comfort quilts came as a way to make those long hours of treatment a little bit easier to endure. I found a pattern for a simple block square pattern lap quilt and began one for my mom.
Jinny’s Rainbow Comfort Quilts is a continuation of that first quilt. Lap quilts are made in homes and donated to Overlook Hospital. They are distributed by the staff to adult patients undergoing treatment at the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center. They are for the patients to keep. Monthly quilt workshops are held in my home. Quilt kits, with pre-cut squares, backing and binding, are available for people to work on in their own homes as well. Monetary donations go toward purchasing additional fabric, batting, and thread for quilts.
Please join us in this worthwhile project. Many lives have already been touched in a positive way.
